This is Kenya at its most untamed. Seven days through three of the north’s most compelling destinations — each one completely different, all of them extraordinary. Start in Meru, one of Kenya’s best-kept secrets, where Born Free was filmed and the wildlife roams with barely a tourist in sight. Move on to Samburu, home of the famous Special Five and some of the most dramatic landscapes in East Africa. Finish in Nanyuki, with Mount Kenya on the horizon and front-row access to Ol Pejeta Conservancy — the last refuge of the northern white rhino. This is a trip for travellers who want something real.

Arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where a Tribal Adventures representative will meet you and transfer you to Wilson Airport for your morning flight to Meru.
Touch down at Meru’s remote airstrip and you’ll immediately feel it — this is a different kind of Kenya. Fewer vehicles, denser bush, and a raw, untouched quality that most safari destinations have long lost.
Afternoon game drive straight from the airstrip. Meru’s landscape is lush and varied — open grasslands, dense riverine forest, and wide floodplains that attract an incredible diversity of wildlife.
Overnight: Elsa’s Kopje (Luxury) / Ikweta Safari Camp (Mid-Luxury).
A full day in one of Kenya’s most underrated parks. Rise before sunrise for an early game drive — the light is extraordinary and the wildlife most active in the cool of the morning.
Meru is one of the few parks in Kenya where you can see all of the Big Five, including both black and white rhino. It’s also where Joy and George Adamson raised Elsa the lioness, made famous by Born Free — the spirit of that story is very much alive here.
Late morning: optional guided bush walk through the park’s riverine corridors with your expert guide.
Afternoon game drive as the golden hour approaches. Evenings at camp are as good as the drives — listen for hippo calls and the distant roar of lions.

Sunrise game drive before breakfast — make the most of your last morning in Meru.
Transfer to the airstrip for your short flight north to Samburu. As the landscape shifts from green to red and the acacia trees thin out, you’ll know you’ve crossed into the real north.
Samburu is arid, dramatic and utterly captivating. Check in, freshen up, and head straight out for an afternoon game drive along the Ewaso Nyiro River.
This is your first chance to spot the Samburu Special Five — keep your eyes open from the moment you leave camp.

Two full game drives today — morning and late afternoon. Samburu rewards patience and sharp eyes.
The Samburu Special Five are the stars here: the reticulated giraffe (the most beautiful of all giraffes), the long-necked gerenuk standing upright to browse, Grevy’s zebra with its fine stripe pattern, the regal Beisa oryx, and the Somali ostrich with its distinctive blue neck. None of these are found in the Masai Mara or Amboseli — this is their territory.
Add to that lions, leopards, cheetah, elephants and crocodiles along the river, and you have one of the richest game-viewing experiences in Kenya.
Optional evening: sundowners on the riverbank watching elephants cross as the light fades.

One last morning drive in Samburu — there’s always something new to find.
Fly south to Nanyuki, with Mount Kenya rising magnificently ahead of you as you land. This is the gateway to Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa and one of the most important wildlife conservation areas on the continent.
Afternoon game drive through Ol Pejeta. The conservancy is home to the Big Five, but the real draw is its rhino programme — this is where you’ll find the world’s last two northern white rhinos, Najin and Fatu.
Overnight: Asilia Ol Pejeta Bush Camp (Luxury) / Maisha Sweetwaters (Mid-Luxury).
Your final full day on safari — and Ol Pejeta saves the best for last.
Morning: visit the northern white rhino enclosure for a guided, close-up encounter with Najin and Fatu — the last two members of their subspecies on Earth. It’s humbling, moving, and utterly unforgettable.
Afternoon: track lions with the conservancy’s research team, visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary (the only place in Kenya where you can see chimps), or simply enjoy a final long game drive.
Evening: farewell dinner at camp as the stars come out over Mount Kenya.
Overnight: Asilia Ol Pejeta Bush Camp (Luxury) / Maisha Sweetwaters (Mid-Luxury).
A gentle final morning — a visit to Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy after breakfast. Get to really interact with some rescued animals, feed them and even hitch a ride on a 160+ old tortoise.
Transfer to Nanyuki airstrip for your flight back to Nairobi. Arrive in time for onward connections or, if your flight allows, a stop at the Giraffe Centre or a final lunch in the city.
Transfer to JKIA for your international departure. The north stays with you.
Elsa’s Kopje (Meru National Park)
Perched dramatically on a rocky outcrop in Meru, Elsa’s Kopje is one of Kenya’s most romantic lodges. Named after Elsa the lioness of Born Free fame, it offers sweeping views, exceptional guiding and a deeply intimate safari experience.
Elephant Bedroom Camp (Samburu National Reserve)
Right on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, this stylish tented camp has a front-row seat to elephants, lion and the full cast of Samburu wildlife. Beautifully designed, brilliantly located.
Asilia Ol Pejeta Bush Camp (Nanyuki / Ol Pejeta)
A classic tented bush camp inside Ol Pejeta Conservancy, with Mount Kenya as a backdrop and direct access to the conservancy’s extraordinary wildlife. Intimate, eco-conscious and genuinely spectacular.
Ikweta Safari Camp (Meru National Park)
A well-positioned, comfortable camp that gives you great access to Meru’s wildlife without the luxury price tag. Warm, personal service and excellent guiding make it a firm favourite.
Soroi Samburu Lodge (Samburu National Reserve)
Set in a prime wildlife area along the Ewaso Nyiro River, Soroi Samburu combines great game viewing with comfortable lodge-style accommodation and a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
Maisha Sweetwaters (Nanyuki / Ol Pejeta)
Located inside Ol Pejeta, Maisha Sweetwaters offers solid mid-range comfort with the same incredible wildlife access as its luxury neighbours — including the northern white rhinos.
January – March: Dry and warm. Excellent game viewing across all three destinations. Quieter than peak season with great value.
June – October: The best overall window. Dry conditions concentrate wildlife around water sources, making sightings superb. July–October overlaps with the Great Migration if you want to extend your trip south.
November – December: Short rains. The bush greens up beautifully and bird life explodes. Game viewing is slightly harder but the landscapes are stunning and rates are lower.
April – May: Long rains — not recommended for first-time safari guests. Roads can be difficult and some camps close.

Yes. Most nationalities require an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Apply online at etakenya.go.ke at least 2 weeks before travel. The fee is USD 30 for most nationalities.
Meru is one of Kenya’s least-visited major parks — and that’s exactly the point. You’ll rarely share a sighting with another vehicle. The wildlife is equally impressive to more famous parks, and the atmosphere is completely different. It’s safari as it should be.
The Samburu Special Five — reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, gerenuk, Beisa oryx and Somali ostrich — are northern species not found in Kenya’s southern parks. They’re endemic to the arid north, making Samburu the only place in Kenya to reliably spot all five.
Yes — Ol Pejeta offers guided close-up encounters with Najin and Fatu, the world’s last two northern white rhinos. This is one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences in Africa. Numbers are limited and advance booking is essential.
Nanyuki sits at around 1,900m altitude, so mornings and evenings can be genuinely cool, especially compared to Samburu or Meru. Pack a warm fleece or light jacket — you’ll thank yourself on early-morning drives.
Exceptional. Meru has over 300 species, Samburu over 450, and Ol Pejeta is equally rich. If you’re a birder, let us know and we’ll tailor the guiding accordingly.
Most light aircraft restrict luggage to 15kg (33lbs) in a soft-sided bag only — no rigid suitcases. This is a firm weight limit. All camps have laundry facilities so packing light is easy.
Yes. Game drives are suitable for all ages. Guided walks and rhino encounters are recommended for children aged 10 and above. Let us know in advance and we’ll adjust the pace and activities to suit your family.
The Kenyan Shilling (KES). USD is widely accepted at lodges and for tipping. Carry some cash for smaller purchases. ATMs are available in Nairobi and Nanyuki town.
